Homeopathic Remedies For Attention Deficit Disorder Treatment - The Right Choice For Your Child

The number of attention deficit disorder treatments available today can be overwhelming. Unfortunately due diligence no longer means just asking the doctor what you should do. They are often the first to jump on the prescription drug bandwagon. This remains so even though the risks of ADHD drugs far outweigh any possible benefit to a child in particular, with ADHD.

It is the parents' decision when it comes to attention deficit disorder treatment of their child. Having this huge responsibility can cause a lot of stress, not only physically, emotionally, and mentally, but financially as well.

Of course, any parent would want to choose the best for their child when it comes to treating attention deficit disorder. Given all the choices for treatment, it can be confusing which one to actually pick for you child.

Several attention deficit disorder treatments are available. It is important to be open-minded in considering one's options and to consider factors such as safeness and cost-effectiveness. Of course, you need to make sure that it is highly efficient as well.

Medications for ADHD can be expensive. Moreover, these prescription ADHD drugs can cause a lot of potentially dangerous side effects. There is also a risk for abuse in using these ADHD meds, and many of the long term effects remain unknown.

Homeopathic remedies are a better alternative to prescription ADHD medication. These remedies are natural, with ingredients used in its solutions coming from mold, plants, fungi, animals, and other elements found in nature.

Used for a variety of diseases and disorders, homeopathic remedies may also be used as an attention deficit disorder treatment. Commonly, natural cures for ADHD contain hyoscyamus niger. This is very effective in controlling hyperactivity and restlessness.

Other remedies may contain verta alb, tuberculinum, and arsen iod. These ingredients have a calming effect and help reduce temper tantrums, outbursts, and destructive behavior.

Although effects may take between 3 to 6 weeks, it's well worth the wait. A noticeable difference in focus, attention, and behavior can be seen with the use of homeopathic remedies for attention deficit disorder treatment. Homeopathic remedies are absolutely safe and non-addictive. There are no side effects to worry about.

You're the parent and you have to make this difficult decision on behalf of your child. Spend some time researching the alternative options available. It may be one or two or even a combination of three or more treatments that are best for you child. Remember that nothing is immediate and patience will be required no matter what your choice.

What Causes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder?

Today there is an increase of awareness of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD, consequently this has led to a better understanding for children and adults who once were considered a family or social problem.

As previously discussed, ADHD children generally have a hard time coping with schooling or adults who have a hard time sticking with a particular job. However, society has grown to understand that such individuals are dealing with serious problems that stem from the condition of ADHD than can be treated. Although, the majority of society does not understand what causes Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. What they do understand is that ADHD is a very complicated condition, which stems from many different elements.

It is important to discuss what does not cause ADHD, before discussing what does cause such a condition. A multitude of unrelated ADHD myths abounds and confuses many people as to its origins. Here you will find a list of disputed assumptions considered by research.

1. Diet - This assumption dates back to the 70's as it was considered that Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is caused by sensitivity or allergy to certain types of food, for the most part baby food. Although, no research in decades past proves this claim to be a cause of ADHD. The rumor that increased intake of foods like sugar tends to make children impulsive and hyperactive has been reinforced by the media. No relation between the intake of sugar and the behavior of children and their learning patterns has been established by clinical research.

2. Hormonal Imbalance - Although hormones do influence the moods and behaviors of an individual, hormonal imbalance does not cause ADHD. Keep in mind that there has not been any substantial connection between an ADHD episode and hormone levels. Hormones may be at play while causing individuals to be out of focus or impulsive at various times but they do not cause ADHD and its many other symptoms.

3. Vestibular or Balance Problems - Research of the past has determined that learning and behavioral problems stem from the vestibular system of the brain, which controls a proper balance. The proposed treatment at that time for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder was that of motion sickness. However, over the years of research has not proven the relationship of the vestibular system and ADHD. There has been no link found between the two.

4. Family Life and Parenting - Many individuals attribute poor parenting or family problems as the cause of the disorder, since the symptoms Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder involve behavioral problems. However, the parents have not raised these ADHD children poorly not do they come from ADHD dysfunctional families. For instance, an ADHD child is not encouraged by its parents to misbehave at school and not sit still. Rather their behavior can still be hard to manage even when receiving the proper disciple from their parents and perhaps even more, but since their problem also has neurological components.

5. Excessive Television Viewing - Popularly seen as a cause for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is television. Although research has shown that viewing violence on television can increase aggression in children may be comparable to the hyperactivity and impulsiveness in patients of ADHD, however such behavior is not synonymous to ADHD. In reality, research has proven that the amount of time-spent viewing a television show is not different from that of children of the same age group.

People can now focus on the more plausible causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, since these other factors play no part in causing ADHD. Research shows that the majority of the factors are found in prenatal, genetic and neurological factors. Knowing what does not cause, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder helps many individuals to understand what really causes the condition. Studies still have not determined a specific origin of ADHD. Nevertheless, with more research, the mystery of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD may soon surface.

Attention Deficit Treatment For Adults

It is important to understand what ADD is before moving on to the treatment of the same. Attention Deficit disorder aka ADD is a condition where it is very difficult for the individual to pay attention and exhibit impulsive behaviour in various situations. People with the disorder normally find it difficult to deal with different tasks given to them; they simply cannot focus or concentrate on what they are doing and feel constant restlessness. Attention deficit disorder can obstruct your normal life and affect you family and social relations to a large extent.

Symptoms of ADD

The disorder is most commonly found in children and even the adults affected by this disorder because the disorder is rather difficult to diagnose and the symptoms are combined with many physical and psychological alterations. The attention deficit symptoms carry forward from childhood to the adult phase and the most common symptoms are hyperactive, inattentive, anxiety, learning disability, difficulty in speaking and hearing and also exhibits combined symptoms of other emotional behaviour disorders such as obsessive-compulsive syndrome and conduct disorder are prevalent in individuals with the disorder.

Physiological changes in ADD individuals

Obesity, bedwetting and low self esteem are some of the physical changes that are associated with children suffering from the disorder, which again is result of various psychological conditions and manifestations.

Treatment for Attention Deficit Disorder

We need to face the fact that treatment for this disorder in adults does not promise a cure though the effect of the symptoms can be controlled with medication or behavioral therapy and sometimes both methods are used to treat the individual. Studies reveal that the symptoms persistently exist from childhood and become a chronic condition. Treating ADD patients is rather a difficult task, as the cause of the disorder is not yet ascertained and therefore diagnosing the problem gets delayed and so does the treatment. The disorder is more prevalent in men than in women. Some researchers feel drug abuse anti-social behaviors are related to Attention Deficit Disorder.

Are there any games for the disorder?

As we have learnt that the disorder itself does not have a permanent solution and to an extent the symptoms can be treated, which can bring some respite to people suffering from this disorder. You can access the games on lumosity.com that are scientifically devised by neurologists and they can certainly make a difference to your condition for example, playing the Koi game can revive you focussing skills.

This article was written by Dr.Craig Robin, a Scientist from Harvard University who has dedicated his life to the research and development of scientific brain games. Thousands of people have joined his program and have been a life that is no more attention deficit.

Teen Attention Deficit Disorder - They're Being Treated With Hallucinogens

What would you think if your child received advice to "tune in, turn on, and drop out"? Would you think it was Timothy Leary, Ken Kesey and the 'Merry Pranksters' Haight-Asbury Bay hippies era revisited?

What would you think if your child's attention span issues were being treated by well-intentioned district psychologists with a known hallucinogen from a mushroom called psilocybin?

Think again, because that's almost the case in many American schools, as the pharmacy kit-bag opens further with speculative treatment therapies for teen attention deficit disorder. Wide spread medication of American kids and adults is based on use of amphetamines and stimulants, which in recent clinical research are shown to mimic some of the hallucinogenic properties of mushroom psilocybin.

Over 6 million Americans each day receive behavior modifying medications like Ritalin for alleged attention deficit disorder. Perhaps no wider spreading trend, beyond over-budgeted and under-performing schools themselves, should cause parents to wonder than the medicating of teenagers in the pursuit of "normative standards".

Straight Talk On Attention Disorder In Young People. Asking whether teens have attention span issues is like asking whether the Pope is Catholic? Of course they do...but it's a matter of degree when comparing "Jody can't concentrate on her class work" to increasingly obtuse and theoretical concepts of the "normative standard" for teens.

Here's the current list of "usual suspect" symptoms to look for if you think your child may have attention deficit disorder. He'll be fidgety, squirmy, evidencing low concentration, bored, unable to complete assignments, forgets what was taught in class.

Psychiatric Meds - Anti Depression And Anti Anxiety... Once you "prime the pump" and commence use of neural-blockers you're playing in a complex arena. 4 million miles of nerve fibers are imbedded within your brain's neural architecture of over 10 billion cells. Is it any wonder that "psychiatric theory" comes unstuck in the "reality" of this complexity and the necessary uniqueness of each person?

Stimulants And Amphetamines - Major Chemical Interventions. Remarkably, a clinically observed "over-active" child showing alleged attention deficit hyperactivity disorder receives mood-altering powerful stimulants from the class known as methylphenidates under brand names including Ritalin and Concerta. Now to the stimulants add another potion from the class of legally approved amphetamines under labels such as Dexedrine or Adderall.

Ritalin Side Effects. It's true that 70% or more of the "standard population" will respond favorably to Ritalin for attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. However, that leaves a "big chunk of statistical change" or 20% or more of the same medicated population that runs the risk of becoming seriously and psychiatrically unglued by the experience.

* Hyper-Nervous Jitters. Physical manifestations of Ritalin abuse can include profound states of agitation and "jittery feeling". Doctor's response? Take another intervention drug or beta blocker blood pressure med...so you now have two powerful drugs interacting.

* Irritability And Relapse Depression. As powerful attention disorder meds wear off, people can experience anger, irritability and a form of 'rebound' short-term depression. Solution? Other drugs may be prescribed such as serotonin or the class of alpha agonist medications.

* Stomach And Digestive Disorders And Headaches. It's a known fact that amphetamines and stimulants, including Ritalin, can cause appetite suppression. Solution? While avoiding Ritalin abuse, users may be asked to time their meds, in order to "wear off" just before meal times. Other Ritalin users experience stomach irritability that takes months to control, accordingly are instructed to "take your meds with your meals".

* Sleeping Disorder. "Short" and "long" acting stimulants remain neural-blockers, not matter which way you look at it. Not surprisingly, the chemically induced stated of "controlled stimulation" carries some unwanted baggage, such as sleeping disorders. Reduced meds may be a partial solution.

* Increased Blood Pressure And Blood Glucose. Borderline diabetics may trigger adult onset diabetes due to elevated blood glucose. Similarly, these stimulants and amphetamines meds stimulate all sorts of metabolic activity, including blood pressure.

* Nervous Tics Exacerbated. If a patient normally exhibits the sort of patterned nervousness and "tics", then these drugs will amplify these tics as well as the underlying attention span disorder complex.

Non Pharmaceutical Alternatives. Fortunately, families can now turn back into time, and begin selective use of various herbs like St. Thomas Wort, nature's valium, rosemary, ginseng, centella asiatica as well as to an evolving class of exercise and visual programming aids that allegedly can actually train the ADD-HD person to create new neural pathways (think brain right and left hemispheres) to adjust for certain imbalances

Your Guide to the Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder

For parents diagnosing ADD/ADHD in their children, it is of utmost importance to be familiar with the symptoms of attention deficit disorder. Children mature at different rates, but most small children show some of the symptoms. A lack of attentiveness becomes a problem when it is inappropriate for the child's age.

So what specifically are the symptoms of attention deficit disorder? According to the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders for the year 2000, there are nine ADD symptoms and nine more symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity used for diagnosing add ADHD. ADD is diagnosed when the symptoms of inattentiveness are present for 6 months or more. ADHD is diagnosed when ADD is present and the symptoms of hyperactivity and impulsivity are also present.

To qualify as symptoms of attention deficit disorder, the child must display the characteristics often enough for them to cause problems for him or her socially and academically. If a child displays 6 of the following 9 characteristics, ADD is probable:

1) The child makes careless mistakes in schoolwork and does not pay attention to details.

2) The child has problems keeping his or her mind on play or work activities.

3) When you speak to the children with ADD, they don't seem to pay attention.

4) They don't finish their school assignments, but it is not because they are being oppositional. In other words, they can't finish their work, whether they want to or not.

5) The child is disorganized.

6) The child doesn't like school or other activities that require a lot of mental effort for a long period of time.

7) Children with ADD tend to lose things they need for school, such as pencils, assignments, and the like.

8) ADD children tend to be distracting.

9) And finally, they tend to be forgetful.

Diagnosing add ADHD requires the above set of symptoms of attention deficit disorder, along with at least six of these other symptoms displayed: fidgeting, not being able to stay in their seat, restlessness, inability to play quietly, acts like they are "driven by a motor", overly talkative, blurts out answers, can't wait their turn, and interrupts others' conversations.

There is more to diagnosing add ADHD, however, than just the presence of the symptoms of attention deficit disorder. For one thing, the symptoms must cause significant impairment to the child in school and in social activities. Also, the symptoms must be present in more than one setting. For instance, if the child only shows them at school and not at home, it indicates that the problem is something other than ADD.

Finally, for diagnosing ADD ADHD, it is essential that there is no other diagnosis of a mental condition. If the child can be diagnosed with schizophrenia, a mood disorder, or a developmental disability, that will stand as the primary diagnosis. This is because the symptoms of attention deficit disorder are often present in these conditions.

If your child is diagnosed with add or ADHD, the doctor will normally recommend stimulant medication. Before moving forward with this type of medication, educate yourself so you know what you are getting into. The side effects of stimulant medication are numerous and sometimes severe.

We have found that a more natural approach has given great results in improving behavior and concentration. By focusing on diet and using herbal supplements, our son's behavior has turned around completely. It is important to look beyond the doctor's recommendations when diagnosing add, ADHD and other behavioral issues. By doing so, you will avoid the pitfalls of stimulant medication and provide a healthier future for your child.

Thumbsucker

ThumbsuckerA sterling cast--including Vince Vaughn, Keanu Reeves, Vincent D'Onofrio, and especially Tilda Swinton--lifts this coming-of-age story above the norm. Justin (Lou Pucci, Personal Velocity) is 17, yet he still sucks his thumb. Depressed, he frets that his parents (D'Onofrio, Full Metal Jacket, and Swinton, Orlando) are going to split up, that he has no focus in life, and that the girl he longs for can never love him--until his orthodontist (Reeves, The Matrix) hypnotizes Justin into quitting his thumbsucking, and a questionable diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder results in medication that launches him into a wave of over-achievement. The script, though it has some clever flourishes, never lifts beyond typical adolescent turmoil, but thanks to wonderfully vivid and multi-layered performances (including Vaughn, Wedding Crashers, as a debate teacher with hair issues), the movie never flags. Swinton also executive-produced the movie; she clearly saw in this suburban mother a character she could invest with as much emotion and intensity as the angel Gabriel (Constantine) or the White Witch of Narnia (The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe). It's rich, intricate acting, never showy, yet mesmerizing. Thumbsucker also features Benjamin Bratt (Pinero) and Kelli Garner (Man of the House). --Bret Fetzer

What Is Attention Deficit Disorder - ADD

I have a friend at work that has a grandson that has been diagnosed with child attention deficit disorder. After chatting with her about it for a while I began to wonder how it is possible to tell the difference between someone with ADD and someone who is just plain difficult. It seems to be most difficult to tell with boys under 17 years of age because they tend to progress slower than the girls anyway. My grandmother used to be the head teacher of a primary school and she was quite certain that boys didn't develop intellectually anything like as quickly as the girls.

My interest raised, I decided to investigate further. It appears that there are three stages in normal development. The first stage can be seen in babies when they become focused on one thing for a period of time and ignore everything else. A child whose development stops at this stage might have a tendency towards autism.

The second stage is when a toddler is constantly finding different things of interest but never able to concentrate on one thing for very long. A child who is stuck at this stage of development might be diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder.

At stage three children's abilities mature to the point where they can focus their attention for longer periods and control where and when they change their attention and activity. This is the level of concentration that the child will need to make their classroom experiences a successful one.

My friend says that ADD isn't just about an inability to concentrate for very long. People with Attention Deficit Disorder aren't able to choose when or where to pay attention or when to stop. She told me that when her grandson crosses the road, even though he has been taught over and over how to do it safely, if he has to wait for traffic then he would suddenly go no matter what the traffic is doing. There is never any warning that he is going to do this; he just knows that he needs to cross so off he goes.

The other side of the Attention Deficit Disorder equation is the ability to focus intensely on an activity to the exclusion of everything else, including breaks. The ADD sufferer might watch the same movie over and over or complete the same jigsaw time and time again. Some people say that if this behaviour isn't recognised and treated as early as possible then it could lead to overeating, substance abuse or compulsive behaviour.

ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a variation of Attention Deficit Disorder or ADD. People that suffer from this problem seem to be unable to relax or are constantly on the go. When seated they might be squirming or fiddling constantly, they just won't stay still. This can often be a nightmare for parents of children suffering from ADHD because the child doesn't need much sleep either. Imagine what it would be like to have a child that hardly ever sleeps and is constantly jumping around when they are awake which will be most of the time.

If you are wondering whether a child with ADD will eventually grow out of it then I'm afraid the answer is no. ADD and ADHD are manifestations of physical problems within the brain so it isn't likely to change with age. The disorder can be passed on genetically but bad discipline or poor parenting can't cause it.

How To Treat Attention Deficit Disorder:

Children can receive medication and therapy that helps to overcome the disorder, if it is diagnosed early enough. The problem is diagnosing the extent to which someone requires help, as the spectrum is very wide. Most experts seem to recommend a treatment combining medication and psychotherapy. Psychostimulants such as 'Ritalin' and 'Dexedrine' help to improve the sluggish part of the brain causing the problems. Psychotherapy helps to train ADD sufferers to pay attention, control impulses and behave appropriately in all sorts of situations.

Diet can also be very important in ADD treatment. Some children have bad reactions to certain foods like wheat, chocolate, fruit, dairy products and additives. Additives can be particularly problematic in this respect and a potential link between them and ADD and ADHD has now been discovered.

People suffering from ADD have been found to be lacking in fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6. There is a theory that proper mental function growth is critically dependent on these fatty acids. There is no conclusive evidence of this but an appropriate change in diet might well be worth a try. Omega 3 is found in fish like mackerel and salmon and in flax oil. Safflower oil, canola oil, vegetable oil, margarine, sunflower oil and corn oil all contain Omega 6.

There is a more positive side to ADD. During my research I found a lot of opinion that some of the most famous people from history appeared to exhibit symptoms of ADD. The list of suggestions is quite long but it includes people like Mozart, Pasteur, Einstein and Beethoven. It appears that some of the characteristic symptoms of ADD can lead to outstanding performance so take good care of your ADD child because they might be a genius.

Various Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)

Approximately 5% of the population suffers from ADD, with majority of them being children. However, it is possible for ADD to carry on into adulthood due to a lack of treatment. Whilst there is insufficient research to support the causes of ADD, it can be due to genetics, prenatal conditions or neurological damage.

ADD is a condition whereby the reticular activating system is impaired, reducing the amount of norepinephrine in the brain, which causes difficulty in communication within different regions of the brain. The symptoms of ADD are similar for children and adults, although adults are seldom diagnosed as they have a better ability to cover up their reactions. There are many forms of ADD as well, ranging from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Attention Deficit Behavior Disorder (ADBD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) to Conduct Disorder (CD).

In general, the symptoms such as inability to focus and agitation are known to carry over into adulthood. For our purposes, we will be identifying the various symptoms without distinction towards adults or children. This is due to the likelihood of symptoms carrying over as the children mature.

Inability to Focus

Due to the short attention span of individuals suffering from ADD, they find it difficult to focus on any one task or thought process at a time. This causes them to appear as bored, and they tend to be forgetful. Misplacing items or having wandering thoughts during discussions are very common for them.

Disorganization

For individuals who suffer from ADD, they tend to be restless and inattentive, making it difficult for them to focus on one task at a time. Hence, they tend to be more disorganized as they jump from one object to another, and most of the times they are unaware of their environment, giving them the appearance of being highly disorganized and flighty.

Hyperactivity

Especially for children, it is easy to observe symptoms of hyperactivity. These is usually reflected in their ability to remain in the same position for more than a few seconds. For children, there is a tendency to ignore instructions and be immersed in playing or running around the room. For adults, it may be subtle signs such as fidgeting in the seat continuously, or playing with their hands and feet.

Impulsiveness

This could be manifested in the need to talk excessively, or cutting into conversations before the other party has finished. For children who are playing, it could be sudden actions or a stubborn streak to halt playtime activities. In the classroom, they tend to speak out of turn without waiting for the teacher to call on them, or even before the teacher has finished asking a question. In adults, there is a dangerous tendency to indulge in dangerous activities without careful considerations of the risks or consequences.

Low Self Confidence

Adults and children alike who suffer from ADD tend to have low self confidence due to self directed frustration at their inability to focus and complete tasks at hand. They also suffer from the social stigma and the fear that they are not good enough due to comments from people around them.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder - Controversial Treatments and Management for ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD occurs is a neurobehavioral disorder that affects 3-5 percent of all American children. In a classroom of 25-30 children at least one child has ADHD. It becomes apparent in children of preschool or early school age. It interferes with a person's ability to remain on task and exhibit age-appropriate behavior.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD was first described by a physician named Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845. Dr. Hoffman was also a poet and writer who became interested in writing for children when he could not find suitable material to read to his 3 year old that exhibited symptoms of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He wrote a book of poems characterizing the symptoms of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder called "The Story of Fidgety Philip".

It was not until 1902 that Sir George F. Still published a series of lectures concerning children with impulsivity and significant behavioral problems caused by a genetic dysfunction and not poor child upbringing. His findings were published at the Royal College of Physicians in England. Since then thousands of papers have been published about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD. These papers include information about the characteristics of the disorder, the causes, impairments and treatments.

A child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD faces many obstacles. In order to help children with ADHD adapt in school settings and reach their full potential they need the help of the entire educational system from teachers and counselors to administrators.

If Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD is not dealt with in school age children the struggles to deal with ADHD continue into adulthood.

There are still many controversial issues that deal with the management of ADHD ranging from behavioral interventions to medication. As an educator of 23 years, I am aware of the controversial effects of medications used to treat ADHD. The decision to treat a child with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is ultimately the parents choice.

Having dealt with a large number of students as well as adults in an educational setting, I believe that each person with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, ADHD needs to be dealt with on an individual basis. No two people in this world are alike and each person needs an individual plan that will meet THEIR needs, whether it be medication or a behavioral plan.

If treating your child (or yourself) with medication for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is not an option, then you may want to look into an a new technology called Brainwave Entrainment. Quantum Mind Power: Brainwave Entrainment is a revolutionary new technology that can create new neural pathways in your brain, change patterns of perception and information transfer in the brain, boost your motivation and self confidence, and develop laser-sharp focus and concentration.

Defining Attention Deficit Disorder

Attention deficit disorder (abbreviated as ADD) is a syndrome exhibited usually by children aged seven years and below. The disorder is characterized by the child's persistent impulsiveness, hyperactivity and very short attention span.

The name attention deficit disorder has been widely used to refer to the disorder, but in 1994, researchers, experts and psychologists reached a consensus to use attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder to refer to the condition. In this article, attention deficit disorder would be used to refer to this neurological disorder.

Attention deficit disorder is not a disease. Many parents wrongly take the condition as an ailment, but in fact, the condition is just a behavioral disorder. Many studies have been conducted to pin down its cause, but up to this day, no concrete reason is yet established to explain the occurrence of the situation.

It is estimated that about 3% to 5% of the United States population is affected by this behavioral disorder. Because most of attention deficit disorder patients are kids aged four years old and above, people associate the disorder to young age.

It is estimated that globally, about 8% to 10% of school-age children are affected by this behavioral condition. What is more interesting is that based on statistics and reported cases, boys are more prone to be diagnosed with the condition. The number of girls with attention deficit disorder is really less compared to boys.

But there are reported cases of young adults and even adults that exhibit the manifestations of attention deficit disorder. It is assumed that these adults have retained the attention deficit disorder from their childhood.

Awareness

Studies over attention deficit disorder are yet to establish the real causes of this behavioral condition. The scientific community treats attention deficit disorder as a very young medical or mental case that is yet to be given full-scale research attention.

But because through the years, the number of patients diagnosed with attention deficit disorder is on a constant rise, the global scientific community is started to become alarmed. Statistics show that although the volume of patients with attention deficit disorder worldwide is still modest, it is growing rapidly.

Attention deficit disorder is becoming more common nowadays. Children from all sorts of families, wealthy, average or poverty-stricken, are becoming increasingly exposed to this condition. Even some famous celebrities' children are diagnosed with such a disorder.

As the awareness over attention deficit disorder increases, so does the actual volume. That may be one reason why many parents are suspecting that their children may be affected by this disorder, surging the number of reported cases.

Causes of attention deficit disorder

Early studies suggest that attention deficit disorder can be linked to biological disturbances. The disorder may be linked to brain development problems that occurred while the child was in his development years. Some assert that mild defects to the child's brain during birth may be blamed for attention deficit disorder's onset.

Genetic links are still being considered. Several research efforts indicate that most of the children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder come from families with several members who also experienced the disorder. Although there is still no concrete evidence to back this assertion, some experts readily accept this as a viable explanation.

Physiological observations also indicate that attention deficit disorder is present mostly in children whose brain sizes are about 5% to 10% smaller than the average. Possibly, chemical reactions and changes involving neurons in the brain region can also cause the disorder.

One interesting idea studies are also looking at is the relationship between attention deficit disorder and excessive watching of television among very young kids. Thus, experts advise parents not expose children under the age of two years to television.

Lastly, some experts cite the mother's pregnancy condition for the onset of attention deficit disorder. It has been initially found that moms who still smoked during their pregnant months tend to have children that exhibit attention deficit disorder symptoms. Premature birth is also looked at.

Medications

No definite medication is yet identified or developed to specifically treat children with attention deficit disorder. However, there are several drugs that are administered and prescribed to such children, although doctors remind parents that the treatments are not directly curing the condition.

Many children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder tend to outgrow the condition as they grow up and mature. Thus, it is important that parents know how to handle the situation well. Their patience and understanding may be the only effective treatment there is, for now.

Recognizing Attention Deficit Disorder in a Girl

Attention deficit/hyperactivity, or ADHD, is often diagnosed when children show symptoms of hyperactive and impulsive behavior, along with lack of attentiveness to individual tasks. Without the hyperactivity, a child may be diagnosed as having attention deficit disorder, or ADD. Statistics peg the current prevalence of ADHD at about five percent of the population of the United States, with boys at least four times more likely to have it than girls. Recent studies, however, have shown that attention deficit disorder in a girl may actually be more common, and is often misdiagnosed or undiagnosed.

To understand why it can be difficult to recognize attention deficit disorder in a girl, it is important to look at the symptoms of ADD and ADHD in general. People with ADD suffer from inattention. That is, they have a hard time starting up a task, but if they do, they have a hard time finishing it. If they do continue the task, they may miss or misinterpret certain instructions, leading them to make often careless mistakes in what they do, whether they are working on homework or a financial report. If they must take on duties, they will often choose those that require the least mental effort.

Those with ADD will also lose important items, or will forget where he or she placed them. Those with ADD will also seem dazed, or not listening when they are spoken with. When they do start a conversation, they can speak excessively, but are also easily distracted. People with ADD can also be troubled with a variety of thoughts, so that they find it hard to fall asleep. They are also prone to emotional outbursts and frustration.

Boys with ADHD may be disruptive at home, or in class, and may exhibit symptoms inconsistent with male-related behavior. Boys with ADD, on the other hand, will show less hyperactivity, but will still be easily distracted and can be difficult to speak with. These manifestations often prompt parents every early on to refer their sons for treatment. Girls, however, will show no hyperactivity or blatant distraction. They can daydream - a trait much associated with teenage girls - and they can often be disorganized - a trait that has been considered common.

It is for these reasons that it can be difficult to recognize attention deficit disorder in a girl. Recent research has shown that girls have been largely undiagnosed, and behavior once thought typical of them may actually be signs of ADD. Such behavior may include boyishness, since girls with ADD are prone to using their hyperactive tendencies to engage in physical activities. Another group of girls with ADD may manifest the disorder by talking and socializing excessively. In some cases, attention deficit disorder in a girl may be manifested when a girl engages in risky behavior.

Statistics show that ADD and ADHD girls can show sexual behavior early, and may be prone to early, unplanned pregnancy. Other risky behavior may involve the use of drugs or alcohol. ADD and ADHD may even engage in shoplifting, or may have eating disorders.

Attention deficit disorder in a girl is manifested most commonly by a third group, which consists of shy, inattentive daydreamers who seem to blend into the background. Such girls will often be depressed, and will shy away from society. In contrast to the two other groups, such girls tend to focus excessively on their work as though to compensate for lack of attention to other areas. Such girls tend to be self-critical and anxious of their performance - they also escape diagnosis, until they reach adulthood.

Despite the difficulty of recognizing attention deficit disorder in a girl, the disorder is not incurable. There are medications available to counter ADD, which should be used along with the proper therapy. Psychotherapy can allow older girls and women to talk about their lives and what issues they have to deal with. Psychotherapy can also help them recognize how their behavior is negative or disruptive. It can also give them pointers on how they can deal with ADD symptoms while still realizing their full potential.

Other therapy techniques target parents and siblings of the girl with attention deficit disorder. Family therapy, in particular, gives the family support in dealing with the stress associated with a girl who has ADD. Support groups are also important, especially to young girls who are easily impressionable, and give much weight to self image.

Although it can be difficult to diagnose attention deficit disorder in a girl, the rewards for doing so can be great. A girl can better understand her behavior, and have hope in herself and belief in her potential because she knows that she can be treated. Such a girl can therefore lead a normal life.

The 3 Main Symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder

There are many symptoms associated with attention deficit order and the list can be quite comprehensive; from nuances in their behavioural patterns to even areas of speech and linguistic skills. However, this article will discuss the three main symptoms of this condition as well as some of the minor co-existing symptoms that can exist alongside them.

Attention deficit order is a neurobehavioral developmental disorder that affects about 5% of the world's child population. It also has a tendency to affect boys more than it does girls, with an almost 2 to 1 ratio when it comes to condition achievement. While most people with attention deficit disorder do know even know that they have it in the first place, there are certain coping mechanisms that they develop when they enter adulthood to cope with the conditions and how it affects their behaviour. Methods of treatment would normally incur medication, the use of stimulants and various forms of therapy. While ADHD and attention deficit disorder is a controversial subject, with many camps arguing that it is a part of nuero development in certain specific children, many agree about the main symptoms of the condition.

Under the umbrella terms that can be used to describe ADHD or attention deficit disorder is disruptive behavioural disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder and anti social disorder. We will discuss the main symptoms that carry across these definitions and how you can spot them easily as well for things like early detection and treatment. One of the main symptoms is of course, impulsiveness. This is characterised often by children or individuals unable to control their emotions and their compulsive behaviour. They often act before thinking about the consequences, which can be quite dangerous, as children have been known to fling themselves of a high ledge of even a window due to their attention deficit disorder.

They also have a tendency to interrupt other people when they are in conversation and would insist that they be the centre of attention. There is also the issue of hyperactivity, one of the more common symptoms of attention deficit disorder. This is often seen and tangibilised as spells of restlessness, unable to sit down for a moment, fidgeting, squirming around, climbing on areas of the house or in public and even restless sleep (the inability to enter into SMR sleep). The last main symptom is called inattention, one of the more popular pop culture symptoms featured on movies; but the problem is very real and very serious. These are more prevalent in children, who are unable to pay attention for a long period of time, easily distracted and unable to complete task given to them within any sort of a time frame. Also, you must know that in children, the hyperactivity can come across as defiance and bad conduct, which can be an almost obsessive behaviour pattern in children. These are the 3 main symptoms of attention deficit disorder you should know about and you can use this information for early detection and treatment.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Adolescent Persistence

An hyperactive, inattentive child was once viewed as normal. Children are entitled to be rowdy, are they not? With recent research, however, such cases of attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of the disorder have been brought to the fore. No longer are energetic, forgetful, and easily distracted children considered as completely healthy and free from illnesses or disorder of any kind. They can be diagnosed as having attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD; or attention deficit disorder, or ADD, if the child is simply inattentive and prone to distraction.

This neurological disorder is constantly earning attention and research, as more and more cases are reported. Symptoms of attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of it can be divided into two main classes: inattention and hyperactive-impulsive behavior. Although those suffering from attention deficit disorder are not generally hyperactive, there are a few behavioral conditions that may still apply.

Inattention is simply the inability to stay focused on one task at a time; conversely, it is predisposition to distractibility. In ADD children, inattention can take the form of carelessly done schoolwork, play time mixing with work time, an appearance of distraction if the child is spoken with, inability to follow instructions or conclude duties or tasks, blatant avoidance of mentally challenging tasks, and carelessness in handling important items such as books or school supplies. Other symptoms may include general forgetfulness or procrastination, frequent and often incomprehensible emotional outbursts, and difficulty falling asleep at night.

Attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of the disorder will also show the same symptoms, albeit in a different form. Boys who suffer from the disorder will often eschew difficult schoolwork, or will fail to finish it. They may be difficult to speak with, and if they do start a conversation, they can speak excessively, although they can easily be distracted. They will often be forgetful, and can neglect to pay bills, perform their chores, or even sleep, if they find something to do that is interesting enough to focus their attention on. Such boys may also be frustrated easily.

Attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence is different in girls. In fact, girls are often under diagnosed or misdiagnosed for the disorder. They are not necessarily full of energy, but they will often be mislabeled as party girls or boy crazy, simply because they engage in extreme social behavior. Statistics show that young ladies with attention deficit disorder are more likely to commit minor crimes, such as shoplifting. Statistics also show that girls who suffer from the disorder are more likely to spend their money carelessly.

Attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of the disorder are not incurable, however. There are many modes of treatment available to treat attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of it, and these may be divided into the following classes: therapy, medication, and diet. Treatments will consist of combinations of these individual solutions, although it must be remembered that the use of changes in diet to treat attention deficit disorder has not yet been formally approved by nutritionists and doctors.

Therapy, or counseling, can be carried out on several levels to help the adolescent and his or her family cope with attention deficit disorder. Psychotherapy gives adolescents a chance to speak out about issues that they have to deal with, explore behavioral patterns that they may not perceive to be negative, and learn how to cope with symptoms of the disorder. Social skills therapy and training can assist adolescents in learning how to behave in society. Family therapy can bring together the adolescent's parents and siblings and help them deal with the person with the disorder. Lastly, group support therapy can allow ADD adolescents to avail of the benefits of a network that seeks to help, inform, and educate them of their potential.

Several medications are also available to treat attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of it. Such drugs may include psychostimulants, such as Ritalin. If you consult an ADD case with a doctor, you may also be asked to make dietary changes in the person with ADD in order to support therapy and medication.

Attention deficit disorder and adolescent persistence of it are not hopeless medical cases. In many instances, people with ADD have been found to lead productive, normal lives, and have been able to use their abilities to be successful. With loving support from the family, and with consistent therapy and medication, people with ADD can use their potential.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Adults

Do you always feel restless? Are you unusually outgoing and prefers ardent physical activities? Do you find it hard to concentrate on work or on other activities that need to be done? If your answer is affirmative to all of these questions, there is a great possibility that you have attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder.

Attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder is typically identified in some children, especially those aged seven years and below. You surely have heard about this behavioral condition because the reported cases among children are on the rise. High-profile children or kids of celebrities and personalities are also not spared from having this syndrome.

What exactly is attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder? The disorder is actually a behavioral, mental or neurological syndrome that in innate in people diagnosed with it. It is a brain condition that prevents the person from having focus.

Lack of concentration is a serious problem because no one can really achieve or get things done if he or she finds it hard to focus. That is the general complaint of people diagnosed with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder.

In the United States, about 2% to 5% of school-age children are believed to exhibiting symptoms of this disorder. In adults, it is estimated that about 2% to 4% of the total adult population has it. However, it should be noted that it is rare that an adult is diagnosed with the syndrome.

There is a logical explanation to that. Most adults with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder are those who have the syndrome since their childhood. During their childhood days, the manifestations may be really apparent, but through the years, the individual must have matured physically and mentally.

As a person matures, you know that he acquires new knowledge, skills and coping mechanisms. Thus, an adult with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder may have learned how to compensate for the difficulties he may have faced during childhood.

Symptoms of attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder in adults

Symptoms of attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder in adults are basically the same as the manifestations on children. But the symptoms may have been modified and took a different form.

For example, the unusual rowdiness among children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder may not be evident among adults. But take note that adults with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder tend to be rowdy sometimes, especially when there are opportunities, or if provoked.

Such adults also experience inattentiveness. The manifestation may be different. For example, the person may find it hard to listen attentively and intently to people who are speaking to them. Although they get the message conveyed in conversations, they seem to be inattentive whenever someone is speaking.

Such adults also tend to be too talkative, that others misread as simply being inquisitive or bubbly. They may make sense, of course, but they seem not to be ready to pass the limelight to others.

Adults with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder experiences difficulties in coping up with pressures from work, from school or from social functions. They tend to procrastinate a lot even if they try hard not to.

To them, a task is too boring to accomplish. Often, they multitask bu not productively. They tend to start a lot of things, but struggle to finish even a single of those activities. They may find it hard to practice mental and emotional discipline.

Emotional aspect

On the emotional aspect, adults with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder tend to be cold to relationships and to social functions. They always strive to seek attention from others and are bent to get those attention no matter what.

Because of the hyperactivity among these individuals, they also tend to be too impulsive and impatient. Often, they get engaged in fistfights and violent arguments. They may not throw tantrums but they may react as if they are throwing the adult versions of such tantrums.

Such adults tend to easily lose relationships because they often fall to isolation. In other cases, other people also do not understand their behavior and mistakenly perceive them simply as immature individuals.

It would be hard if you have attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder. But you may always seek professional help. Having developed coping mechanisms sometimes would never be enough because there may be instances when things will fall out of their proper places.

Combating Attention Deficit Disorder With Medication

For those who have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder - or have a child who has been diagnosed - there is an element of relief attached to the diagnosis. Finally, their struggles are validated and defined. And now that there's a name for all the symptoms, there comes the opportunity to treat the symptoms as well. For many who are in this situation, Attention Deficit Disorder drugs are the answer for which they've been searching.

Most often - and most successfully - stimulants are used as Attention Deficit Disorder drugs. Several have distinguished themselves as the more popular of the group.

Adderall - a combination of several different stimulants - is an oft prescribed Attention Deficit Disorder drug that helps to improve concentration and attentiveness in the patient, as well as reduce agitation.

Ritalin, one of the more commonly known Attention Deficit Disorder drugs, has the same effect as Adderall. It has proven very effective in alleviating hyperactivity and emotional outbursts. Other forms of this Attention Deficit Disorder drug are Concerta and Metadate.

Clonidin, most often used to treat hypertension, has shown some success as an Attention Deficit Disorder drug. Much as it lowers high blood pressure it is also beneficial in reducing agitation and hyperactivity.

Strattera is the first non-stimulant medication that has been approved in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder. The advent of Strattera is enormously encouraging as it indicates a possible future of other non-stimulant Attention Deficit Disorder drugs.

Some anti-depressants, such as Wellbutrin, have also been identified as having possible success as an Attention Deficit Disorder drug. However, most are not appropriate for children under eighteen years of age. Your medical professional will best be able to guide you in choosing the appropriate medications.

Information on these particular Attention Deficit Disorder drugs - as well as many others - can be found online. Be sure to thoroughly research any and all medications that are of interest to you. Understanding the Causes of Attention Deficit Disorder - What Can You Do?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD has become a too familiar term currently. Children and adults alike are being diagnosed with this disorder at an alarming rate and everyone is looking for the causes of attention deficit disorder.

Diagnosis is made using the following criteria:

o Constantly in motion, cannot seem to sit still

o Easily distracted from the task at hand

o Inability to finish tasks

o Squirm and fidgets

o Does not seem to listen to instruction

Causes of ADHD

The causes of attention deficit disorder are debated, though there seems to be some evidence that the disorder tends to run in the family. Two genes have been isolated as being potential culprits in the disorder.

Further studies have shown that children of parents who suffer from ADD are three times as likely to have the disorder themselves. Also at a high risk for developing attention deficit disorder are those with the following medical problems:

o Tourettes

o Learning disabilities

o Traumatic brain injury

o Chemical imbalance, extremely low levels of dopamine for example

o Brain structure deformity, some people with the disorder have been found to have a smaller basal ganglia and lower frontal lobe activity

Regardless of the causes of attention deficit disorder the main thing that parents want to know is how is it treated and are there any natural remedies for ADHD? That is, any ways to avoid using medication.

Treatment

Whether causes of attention deficit disorder can be determined or not, sufferers are still faced with the issues of treatment. Common practice among medical professionals is to prescribe stimulant medication to counter the effects of the disorder.

One of the problems with this is you are giving your child what amounts to a controlled substance. One that, by the way, has an extremely high street value, meaning it is used by drug abusers to get high.

Two major side effects of these drugs are sleep and appetite problems. These are two of the main causes of attention deficit disorder symptoms in the first place. The sad thing is that the links between behavioral problems and lack of nutrition and sleep are high, so the very medication that is supposed to help may in fact be making matters worse.

I have personally known children who have lost so much weight due to stimulant medication that it required some type of intervention. These same children had to be given prescription sleeping medication because they were only able to get 2 or 3 hours of sleep each night. It is insane. Pills to bring the brain alive in the morning, and more pills to put it to sleep at night.

Herbal Remedies for ADHD

The best way to avoid this insanity is found in providing the body with balanced nutrition. This includes improving the child's diet, and using vitamins, minerals and herbal remedies for ADHD; these are all natural alternatives to stimulant drugs as discussed above. Look for products specifically formulated to balance mood and the ability to concentrate.

Along with a healthy diet, exercise and adequate sleep, herbal remedies for ADHD on the market today can have an amazing effect. Look for herbal remedies that contain the calming herbs lavender, and lemon balm. Known to have a calming influence on the central nervous system, these are an excellent example of herbal remedies for ADHD. They also work well for adults with anger and ADHD issues.

Another great example of herbal remedies for ADHD is a product called Focus Formula. The number one complaint of patients with attention deficit disorder is their inability to focus on everyday tasks. This herbal solution uses non-addictive natural substances like Gingko Biloba to promote memory and focus. This herbal remedy also contains many other herbs conducive to treating ADHD.

Conclusion

Causes of attention deficit disorder will continue to be debated, however the treatment path is clear. Make sure the child has a good sleep routine and is receiving balanced nutrition. See my website for more information on this. Provide the sufferer with natural remedies that aid and heal the body instead of harsh stimulant drugs that are habit forming and could complicate the disorder. Addressing all these issues simultaneously is the safest and most effective treatment for ADHD.
